The Application Process

To apply for membership please read and complete a membership application form.

Take note of the additional information and the references that are required.  These are detailed in the second part of the form and differ according to the level of membership you are requesting.

Send your application form and supporting documents either electronically by email to sec@scmshq.org, by post to the SCMS at our Southampton, UK address or in person to the office or a member of the Society’s Management Committee.

Once received, your application will receive an initial review by the SCMS CEO, commensurate with the level of membership you are requesting.

If your application is considered satisfactory by the CEO it will then be passed on to another senior member of the Society for one further review. Your references, work history and qualifications will all be validated by the reviewers.

Where any further information or references are required, you will be advised by the Society.

If all reviews are satisfactory you will be informed of the success of your application and be provided with an invoice to enable you to pay the relevant membership fee.  This can be done on-line using the website subscriptions page.  Membership of the SCMS also provides eligibility to be listed on the FEMAS website (Federation of European Maritime Associations of Surveyors and Consultants), for an additional fee, if this is of interest to you.

On receipt of the membership fee, staff in the Southampton office will prepare a certificate of membership and send it to you in the post. Your details will then be added to the Society’s website and, if you have paid the additional fee, also to the FEMAS site (www.femas.org). There is a further option to have details of your business provided on the SCMS website.

In the event your application is unsuccessful you will be informed by letter and advised why your application was denied.  Advice may be given on what actions are required for a successful application in the future.
