Welcome to
The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors
Since its inception in 1920 the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS) has achieved an enviable reputation as a highly professional organisation in which Consulting Marine Engineers, Naval Architects and Ship Surveyors are able to offer clients a comprehensive range of technical marine services supported by proven academic and practical capabilities derived from extensive experience. In 2021 the SCMS expanded to include Fishing vessel services and welcomed Fishing Vessel professionals into the organisation as another source of knowledge. This website provides details of the Society's aims and objectives, activities, membership, services, and includes a Members' Directory.
Small Vessel and Fishing Vessel Services AND Surveys
The Society is an MCA appointed Certifying Authority and as such our authorised Examiners offer a comprehensive range of technical marine services supported by proven academic and practical capabilities derived from extensive experience. Our Examiners have intimate knowledge of the MCA's Small Craft Codes for vessels under 24 meters and Fishing Vessel Regulations for less than 24 meters and are available to provide advice and undertake surveys for boat owners or managing agents.
Members' clients include yard owners, ship owners, marine underwriters, average adjusters, P & I clubs, ship and engine builders, salvage associations, class societies, statutory authorities, offshore industry, harbour authorities, members of the legal profession and others.
SOCIETY Membership
With expert witnesses and member firms in more than 15 countries and membership representation in at least 34 countries, becoming a Member of SCMS gives you access to a vast range of expertise and experience. Many of the members are also actively involved in surveying to small vessel codes and provide support and mentoring options for other suitably qualified and experienced members who wish to pursue a new role as an SCMS Examiner (surveyor).
Expert Witness and technical adviser services
Some members of the Society act as expert witnesses and/or technical advisers. They may participate in arbitration either as arbitrators or as expert witness. They can act as advisers in charter party disputes and as technical advisers to the Chair or Enquiry Panels in marine enquiries and investigations.
Whilst the total range of services may not be offered by every individual member of the Society, the total membership has a large repertoire; whatever service may be required it is sure to be available.
