Professional Indemnity INSURANCE

Professional indemnity (PI) insurance is required for all Examiners that are approved by the SCMS to undertake survey work.

The SCMS has a duty to check that such insurance is in place. Examiners are entitled to arrange this insurance with any broker that they choose.

Please be aware that although many firms offer PI insurance they do not always specifically cover you for the survey work that you will undertake as an Examiner. Check the cover carefully and confirm the exact nature of your work with the insurer/broker.

Companies detailed below are known to offer cover for the work of marine surveyors/examiners.

ITIC Insurance
ITIC is the leading provider of professional indemnity insurance in the marine sector. ITIC is a non-profit mutual insurer and is owned by their policyholders, or members. Profits are returned to members in the form of credits to members who renew their policies with ITIC.

They insure over 850 members who carry out marine surveying activities, from sole traders to large companies.
