Fishing Vessel TECHNICAL Services

The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors is a Fishing Vessel Certifying Authority authorised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to examine and certificate Small Fishing Vessels as listed below.  The Society operates as a non-profit organisation and as such will ensure a cost effective and efficient service for those involved in the fishing vessel industry.

The Society has undergone a smooth transition for those involved in the industry from the previous authorisation SEAFISH, across to the SCMS services. The previous Head of Survey at SEAFISH, Richard Blackhurst, became the new Head of Fishing Vessel Survey at the SCMS from the 21st July 2020. In addition to Mr Blackhurst there are a number of surveyors that joined the team authorised by the SCMS around the country, who were previously involved with the surveys under SEAFISH. Survey knowledge within the industry has transitioned across to the new, Fishing Vessel Certifying Authority.

Builder’s Advice Notes produced by SCMS can be accessed on our SCMS FV Builder’s Advice Notes page.

From October 2023 the SCMS have been additionally authorised by the MCA for several new services. A full list of services offered are as follows:

  • Newbuild Surveys of New Fishing Vessels of less than 15m LOA
